2015-03-20: Jougla Point & Port Lockroy

First, we were dropped on Jougla Point, a rocky and in summer, a penguin infested place. On the shore, somebody with lots of time hat some  whale bones neatly rearranged. We also found some rusty metal rings (probably from barrels of  the whaling days) and a cable.

We then were shuttled over to Port Lockroy and Base A. Base A was a British overwintering station taking weather measurement and doing research on the ionic layer of the stratosphere. The base was shutdown in 1962, and reopened as a museum in 1996.  It was only in 2009 that  paintings of an overwintering diesel mechanic, Evan Watson, were rediscovered —  the nights were long and cold, and I can clearly see what those British lads  had in their mind …. 🙂

Noon position: 64° 49’S 63° 31’W; Wind WSW Force 6; Sea state 2; Air 2°C.
