2015-05-06: To Arica

My last day in Chile — time to leave Santiago for good.

Jorge whom I had met at the Easter Islands had finally made it back to the continent by sail boat. I met him for lunch to learn about the his, Pancho, and Rafaels adventures:

For most of the time, the trip went smoothly. As planned, they went South and counted on the Humboldt stream to take them back North to Puerto Montt. During the last couple of days of the journey however, they encountered a storm. They needed to take the sails down and  to continue by diesel engine. Off the coast, they ran out of fuel and had to ferry in additional diesel by helicopter. Jorge who had a muscle of his hand ruptured took to opportunity to have himself airlifted out to Puerto Montt. Well, I certainly would have enjoyed that helicopter ride as well 🙂

In the early evening, a cab rushed me through the heavy traffic of Santiago’s evening rush hour to the airport, and I made it comfortably to the  flight to Arica. Good job, Mr. Cabby. Tired, I arrived at the hotel in Arica at 1:30 AM.
