Next on the agenda was Petermann Island. We were dropped next to a research station that had already closed down for the winter. It was nice and sunny.
Hedging season for the gentoo penguins was long over, so there remained relatively few of them on the island (still many). They enjoyed chasing each other over the island.
We saw a Wedell seal (big bag of blubber) and South Polar Skuas fighting over the meat of a dead penguins.
Petermann Island was the most southern landing. The MS Ortelius then headed back north via the Lemaire channel. Worth mentioning are 2 mountain peaks that were referred to as Una’s tits. The name made it into the maps and was only renamed into Una Peaks recently.
