2015-05-29: Cusco

We started the day by visiting the few remains of the Inca building at la Qoricancha aka the temple of the sun. The Spanish conquistadores levelled it, and build a church and an adjacent convent, Santo Domingo, on top of it.  An earth quake destroyed part of the building in 1950, unveiling some Inca foundations that were long thought to be lost. Today, the convent houses several exhibitions. There is a permanent exhibition of religious paintings in the basement, and changing exhibitions at the first floor.

When we arrived at Santo Domingo, there was a Christian procession going on.  We strolled around la Quricancha, and then had lunch. Later in the afternoon, I headed for the Inca museum near the Plaza de Armas. It has a quite big collection of Inca artefacts such as textils, ceramics, etc. And it explain the history of the Inca to the extent known. The museum itself stands on the foundations of an Inca buildings, and is a fine example of a colonial style dwelling. When I returned to the hotel, it had already become dark, and I bumped into more Christian processions.
