Nothing much to say about this day. Our diving casualty, Perla, was evacuated to safety. Diving operation were shut down for the rest of the trip. We then headed to deception bay, a whaling outpost\/whale processing plant during the early 20th century. Starting in the 1920’s, the whales were processed on factory ships, and the factory on the island was abandoned in 1931 . Whaling then lost its appeal for most as there were not too many whales left in the region, and substitutes for whale products were found.<\/p>\n

The wind and the swell was however too strong to allow for a safe passage through Neptune\u2019s bellows into the inner bay of Deception Island (Port Foster). After some hours of waiting for the weather to improve, we reluctantly went on. I would have loved to see the outpost of human endurance and the testimony of\u00a0 short-sighted human exploitation of nature though.<\/p>\n
